The bastion is the most <strong>innovative<\/strong> element of the fortifications built in the first half of the sixteenth century: placed at the head of one of the vertices of the <strong>pentagonal wall<\/strong>, it was conceived as a defensive system \u201cin the modern style\u201d, with right angles at the junction of the curtain walls and acute angles towards the outside.<\/p>\n<p>In ancient times, a<strong> moat<\/strong> ran along the walls, which dried up when the defensive reasons that had determined its creation disappeared. During the 19th century, it became clear that the garden land thus created, more than three meters lower than the ground level, did not allow water to flow, creating unhealthy stagnation right next to the town, which would lead to its filling in in 1885.
