Rione Porto e Strada Grande

Rione Porto e Strada Grande

With the construction of the new pentagonal fortification, commissioned by Guidobaldo II Della Rovere, and the incorporation of the Misa River into the walls, a new neighborhood was created in which functional warehouses and dockworkers’ homes were located during the fair. The individual districts were probably divided according to the locations of origin of the goods kept in the warehouses. Traces of this remain in the names of the streets in the neighborhood, including Via Siria, Via Corinto, Via Salonicco, Via Alessandria, Via Rodi, Via Cipro, Via Corfu, etc.

From its conception, the Porto district remained isolated from the city centre due to the Malatesta walls on the opposite bank of the river. Pope Benedict XIV, born Prospero Lambertini, in 1746 authorized Monsignor Giuseppe Maria Ercolani to undertake expansion works. To create the connection between the Porto district and the rest of the urban fabric, the bishop’s palace and the cathedral were demolished on one side, and a thorn of houses on the other. Thus, space was made for the new road artery, the Via Grande, on the background of which the new Porta Lambertina was erected.
