Pinacoteca Diocesana

Pinacoteca Diocesana

Since May 16, 1992, on the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Pope Pius IX, the bishop’s palace has been home to the Diocesan Art Gallery of Sacred Art. In its splendid rooms you can admire works of notable artistic value, prestigious testimonies from the centuries from 1500 to 1800.

The most precious jewel in the collection is The Madonna of the Rosary and Saint Dominic by Federico Barocci (1535-1612), painted between 1588 and 1592 on commission from the Confraternity of the Assumption and the Rosary for the Church of San Rocco. The painting depicts the Madonna supported by some angels holding the Child Jesus in her left hand while in her right she offers the crown of the Rosary to Saint Dominic.

In the same room it is also possible to admire the Baptism of Christ and the Nativity by Andrea Lilli (1570-1631); the Madonna and Child with Saints Lucy, Francis and John the Baptist by Giovanni Andrea Donducci (1571-1655) known as Mastelletta, a pupil of Ludovico Carracci and an artist particularly attentive to Mannerist themes: the Circumcision, late Mannerist work by an Anonymous artist of probable Emilian cultural area from the 17th century. The other rooms of the Pinacoteca house a rich collection of paintings from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Note the Adoration of the Shepherds (1568) and the Crucifixion with the Madonna and Saint George (1585) by Ercole Ramazzani, a pupil of Lorenzo Lotto and numerous valuable sacred and profane objects, including notable pieces of furniture.
