Church of Santa Maria Maddalena

Church of Santa Maria Maddalena

Legend has it, and research confirms this, that the famous Fiera della Maddalena was born in the 13th century, after some relics of the saint and her brother Lazzaro were brought to Senigallia by a princess from Marseille, wife of a local lord. They were placed in the Lombard church of San Gregorio which later took the name of Church of the Maddalena.

In the Middle Ages, there were many cases of fair markets that arose in places where people went on pilgrimages for the relics of some saint. The same happened in Senigallia. The relics became such an object of veneration that they attracted many pilgrims, particularly on the day dedicated to her, July 22. Thus began a fair that later became the great Fiera della Maddalena which took place in the second half of July along the banks of the Misa river.

In the fifteenth century the relics were stolen but the church continued to keep their name.

The building was rebuilt by Giovanni della Rovere in 1480 and his funeral took place in this “famous Temple”.

The current structure dates back to a third reconstruction in 1756. Today, the famous mathematician from Senigallia Giulio Carlo Fagnani is buried inside.
