Portici Ercolani
The Portici Ercolani are one of the urban elements that most characterize the city. Their name recalls Monsignor Giuseppe Ercolani (1677-1759) who designed them in the mid-eighteenth century at the behest of Pope Benedict XIV, born Prospero Lambertini, with the aim of hosting the famous and ever-expanding Fiera Franca annually.
The Herculaneum Porticoes, one hundred and twenty-six arches in Istrian stone, line the right bank of the Misa River. They were originally to be built on the opposite side of the river, but the crisis at the fair, due to the loss of tax benefits, had the effect of blocking new construction and slowing the completion of ongoing construction sites. Today, under the Portici Ercolani, you can relive and breathe in the atmosphere of the fair’s golden years every Thursday morning for the weekly market.
