Mura e Baluardo del Porto
The Porto bastion was the last of the pentagonal fortification to be built; its construction, which took place in 1574, definitively confirmed the desire, expressed by Guidobaldo II Della Rovere, to extend the city beyond the river. The Duke wanted to make Senigallia his ideal city and chose to leave his memory of himself to posterity through the construction of a large work: a fortified wall.
The choice of the pentagonal configuration of the enclosure, considered the perfect shape for defense, was dear to Renaissance image culture due to its homology to the five vertices of the human figure: the head, two hands and two feet. This form would be taken as a model in the creation of the fortified citadels that would proliferate in all Italian and European cities between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
For the first time in its urban history, Senigallia chose to enclose the Misa within the walled perimeter, creating a new district. The city’s organization, on this side, was to enclose a series of blocks with buildings used as functional warehouses during the Maddalena Free Fair at the end of July.
