Mura e Baluardo del Portone

Mura e Baluardo del Portone

The walls overlooking the river, the bastion known as the Posta, the section of walls between the Theatre and the Portone bastion and the bastion itself were built in the second half of the 18th century following the expansion of the city to the west, in the area of the “Maddalena meadows”. This required straightening the bed of the Misa River which at the time formed a bend behind the church of the Maddalena.

The elimination of the bend became necessary both to provide a building area and to optimize the yield of the canal port through improved flow: the width of the river favored the dispersion of water, preventing boats from sailing up it for a sufficient stretch to allow the riverbed to be fully navigable.

In 1759, the architect Sante Vichi of Fano proposed, by excavating a new bed and burying the previous section, a modification of the bend, bringing the river path into line with the city walls.
